If you are on the road in Alberta, and checking out the vibrant town of Okotoks, you can experience a great game of golf amongst the rivers, mountains and plains. Crystal Ridge is a beautiful nine-hole golf course located on the northeast side of Okotoks, and not far from South Calgary.

Golfing at Crystal Ridge is a sought-after experience, whether it is because of the myriad of ageless trees surrounding players, the variety of tees at every hole, or the views of the water and mountains.

“Many people come in after they golf and comment on how challenging and scenic the layout is,” said David Robinson, CPGA head professional. “The eighth hole, for example, has 10 tee boxes ranging in length from 90 yards to 220 yards, with sprawling views of the Rockies beyond.”

Thompson said there are numerous tee boxes on every hole so the course is a perfect one for players of all abilities.

Thompson's favourite hole is Crystal Ridge's No. 4 hole.

“I think (Hole) 4 is one of the strongest par 4s in Alberta,” said Thompson. “As a dogleg left playing 420 yards from the championship tees, it is both long and challenging.”

He said the tee shot needs to carry about 240 to set up a mid-iron shot into a well-protected green.

“Once you are on the huge green, there are many valleys to negotiate to make par,” said Thompson. “Anytime you make four, it is quite an accomplishment.”

Thompson said, all in all, Crystal Ridge is a great test of golf.

Wanting to improve the game here is no problem. Lessons for all ages and abilities are offered by the professional staff for individuals and groups.

The pro shop carries everything a golfer's heart desires, while Orville's Place provides much needed nourishment after an active day. Before it became Orville's, the elegant building once housed the Rowland family, who owned much of the land occupied by the course and surrounding areas. The residence was converted into a clubhouse in 2004 and has retained its charm. An award-winning chef, beautiful surroundings and an event planning team – what more do you need for a special occasion?

Crystal Ridge specializes in corporate golf tournaments where guests can enjoy an excellent practice and preparation area. The club has an active league program, which is open to the public but offers preference to equity members and previous participants. Men, ladies, juniors and seniors have the opportunity to enjoy golf in the leagues.
