Nick Taylor, the 21-year-old from Abbotsford, has been doing well in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. On Wednesday, Taylor advanced to the second round with a 6 & 4 win at Jimmie Austin Golf Club.
Taylor has been inducted into the Abbotsford Sports Hall of Fame and is well thought of in his home town.
“We are all very proud of him,” said Ed Regts of the Hall of Fame. “I hope he remembers that he owes me a round of golf.”
h3. A proud mother
Nick’s mother, Darlene Taylor, spoke from Abbotsford while her son and husband were travelling together in Oklahoma for the pub links. She said that her two sons took up golf as teenagers with a junior membership at Ledgeview.
“They had something to do every day in the summer. It just started off that way and they just got better and better.”
She said that she finds her son’s success very exciting, but she sometimes gets emotional.
“He wants to do well all of the time, and sometimes it gets hard when things don’t go well.”
h3. Focused and appreciative
The pro at Taylor’s home course at Ledgeview, Jason Smith, spoke of Taylor as someone who is not only talented but very deserving.
“I know he’s doing very well,” said Smith. “I think it’s pretty fantastic just for the reason that Nick is such a good kid. He is very focused on his golf, and yet he is a very humble individual and I think that goes a long way with everybody around here—they appreciate him a ton and he is very appreciative of everybody that shows him the support he deserves. The first thing I say about Nick is that he’s a great person. There are lots of people that have the talent level, but Nick also carries himself with a lot of dignity. He is not an arrogant kid at all. He is very even keeled and I think that serves him well on the course. There are lots of times when you don’t know if he has made a double bogey or an eagle. I think that serves him well on the golf course and it serves him well in life. He is a good individual and he has had a ton of success and it certainly hasn't changed him.”
Next week, Taylor will be playing the Canadian Open. At present, he has qualified for five tournaments.
