A course with conscience

This tranquil Maple Ridge golf course contributes to its community.

In the serenity of East Maple Ridge, Heather Hills Golf Course is more than just a place to tee off. It is situated on the lush property of Heather Hills Farm, a plot of land set aside for agricultural initiatives and community development. The developing community will benefit from the course's profits, and from the fundraising that the Heather Hills Society provides to various non-profit organizations and causes.

"We operate much differently than the average golf course," said Gord Robson, executive director of the Heather Hills Farm Society. "We are a non-profit society that aims to benefit youth in need. We work with local organizations geared towards helping youth and we also have our own foster program that we run on the property."

A pro design

The course itself is designed professionally, and its smaller size makes it perfect for those who want to get in a quick game amidst their busy schedule.

"We are a nine-hole, executive class par three course," said Robson. "Our course was designed to have championship quality features by Puddicombe Design and Construction. The property is in a rural setting and the lands surrounding the course are either used for our agricultural initiatives or are protected by a (Greater Vancouver Regional District) GVRD Park."

Smaller is better

While it may be a smaller course, all levels of golfer can enjoy Heather Hills. New players will find it less intimidating than some full-sized courses, and the design features make it just as thrilling for those with more experience.

“Our short holes make the course manageable for those who are just getting into the game," said Robson. "And our championship quality features make the course enjoyable for the avid golfer to work on their short game. With strategically placed sand and water hazards, it really is a great course to practise one's short game."

A welcome addition

Heather Hills fits in well with the myriad of other great courses in the Maple Ridge area. The initiatives promoted by the society are all worthy causes; players can feel good about where their money is going, and enjoy the dynamic course on its own merit.

"Our little course complements these full-sized courses extremely well," said Robson, "because it offers a quicker game without having to sacrifice the quality of one's golfing experience."
