Tournament with a mission

This LPGA tour event gives back to the communities that host it

by Danielle Cameron

The CN Canadian Women’s Open has grown into a signature event on the LPGA Tour, and a favourite among Canadian golf enthusiasts. The 2009 installation of the CN Canadian Women’s Open is taking place at the Priddis Greens Golf and Country Club in Calgary, Alberta, from August 31st - September 6th. There will be 72 holes with a cut after hole 36, and a purse of US$2.75 million.

The field will accommodate 156 players, reduced to the lowest 70 scores and ties after two rounds.

A noble cause

Each year, this exciting competition takes place in a different golf facility, and brings with it a charitable contribution for the hosting city. The CN Miracle Match program donates significant funds to the host city's local children’s charity—this year it will be the Alberta Children’s Hospital.

Not only does the program match the total amount donated to the beneficiary, but it also gives a portion of the tournament’s ticket sale proceeds as well. In this way the CN Canadian Women’s Open has been able to leave a lasting positive impression on every community it visits.

Over the past three years since the Miracle Match program originated, CN and the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA) has raised almost $2 million for donation—enough to make a huge difference in the lives of many people in need.

Last year, the beneficiary was the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), which received a record $1 million during the 2008 tournament. CN will match the monetary amount donated to the program in the weeks leading up to the tournament. Anyone can donate online at www.cnmiraclematch.ca from the time when the site is launched on May 1, 2009, until the end of the 2009 CN Canadian Women’s Open.
