Believe the hype

See why this course is one of Southern Alberta’s most respected golf facilities

by Kirsten Armleder Dean Sklarenko, CPGA head golf pro (2007) at the Picture Butte Golf & Winter Club, said it’s the variety and availability that sets this course apart. “We also have a very relaxed and fun atmosphere,”’ he added. With tree-lined fairways, undulating greens and an abundance of water hazards, it is no wonder the course at the Picture Butte Golf & Winter Club has hosted several provincial championships over the years as well as the 2006 Canadian Senior Match Play Championship. The course began as an 18-hole layout and another nine holes were added in 2004. The newer Harvest Nine is a links-style design boasting undulating greens and wide fairways lined with fescue grass, while the original nine comprise a traditional layout. The course is well-suited for all skill levels; however, there are some areas where even the experts may get themselves in trouble if they don’t have their game faces on. “There are a number of holes that are risk/reward holes where anything from birdie to triple bogies can come into play,” said Sklarenko. Number 7 is the course’s signature hole—and for good reason. Aptly named the Ash-Hole, it’s situated on the Homestead Nine on an old ash and coal mine. “The hole plays from an elevated tee down into an undulating green,” said Sklarenko. “The challenge is the club choice, which can change depending on the strength of the prevailing west wind.” According to Sklarenko, Number 7 may be the most talked-about hole in all of Southern Alberta. His favourite, however, is Number 5. “This is a very fun hole where eagle is a potential, birdie is there for the taking but any missed hits change birdie to double bogie with a penalty shot for hitting the water. This is a hole that is fun to play every day.” And with the spectacular playing conditions at the Picture Butte Golf & Winter Club, golfers may find themselves returning to this course every day to enjoy a fun-filled round of golf. The club also has a grass driving range, practice short game area, a fully stocked pro shop, licensed restaurant and lounge with a patio overlooking the course, and a sports bar.
