Northern Saskatchewan is home to amazing golfing opportunities and more

by Brittni Dale

The greatest golf courses are not necessarily defined by one or two strict criteria. In fact, the best golf courses meet all of the following criteria: friendly people, an easygoing atmosphere, gently rolling hills and magical landscapes. Extra features can include a restaurant, spa or casino for when the game is over. Northern Saskatchewan can offer avid golfers all this and more. If you are looking for a relaxing vacation or just a good game with your pals, Northern Saskatchewan is the place to be.

Prince Albert is the perfect getaway city, with its rich history and magnificent views. Not far away is the village of Goodsoil, known as the Gateway City and home to Northern Meadows Golf Club. Between these two communities is a vast array of golf courses and resorts. Prince Albert National Park is renowned for its lovely Waskesiu Golf Course, founded in 1927.

Not only is there golf in the park, but there are hugely popular hiking trails including the famous Grey Owl Trail. In the 1930's, Grey Owl was Prince Albert National Park's very first hired naturalist. In fact, he didn't just get hired—he moved in. After spending years enjoying and studying the nature there, pneumonia sadly took his life in 1938. Now both the cabin he lived in and the one built for his wife and daughter are open to the public to hike to and explore. In addition, there are seven beaches to relax on in Prince Albert Nation Park and numerous other sports if golfing is not your only interest; cycling, lawn bowling and tennis opportunities are abundant, as well as a variety of other activities.

There are countless other golfing options in Northern Saskatchewan. You can play amidst the pine trees at Memorial Lake Golf Course or enjoy the three spectacular nine-hole courses—along with wildlife sightings—at Elk Ridge. If you are looking for a more nostalgic experience, swing by the century-old Cooke Municipal Golf Course. Truly a golfer’s paradise, it is ranked among the top five public golf courses in both Saskatchewan and Manitoba by Score Golf Magazine and Golf Digest. To complete the whole adventure, visit Spiritwood Golf Course; Spiritwood also offers excellent fishing and camping on the nearly 50 nearby lakes.
