Elk Point hosts annual STARS fundraiser

Elk Point is very much a community golf course. Many of their events are centred around helping out local organizations and charities. In particular, the STARS tournament is one of the most successful of those events.
“It raises about $20,000 every year, and this year will be the 14th annual time we’ve held it,” said Richard Millar, president of the club. “All together, we’ve raised about a quarter of a million dollars hosting it.”
The funds for the tournament go to STARS, an emergency medical transport system. Currently it operates out of three bases in Alberta, two in Saskatchewan and one in Manitoba. It uses primarily helicopters as search and rescue vehicles to help give live-saving transport to critically ill and injured patients, as well as hope to their families and communities.
This year, Elk Point is adding a new tournament to their schedule, and this one hits close to home.
“We’re hosting a tournament to donate money to Haying in the 30’s, a local cancer support society,” said Millar.
Founded in 1999 by Edgar Corbiere, Haying in the 30’s assists people in the local area who have been diagnosed with cancer. Since its inception, the organization has helped more than 2000 people and their families.
“With myself being a survivor,” said Millar, “as well as our superintendent and several others on the board, it’s a very important event for us.”
