Captain… Callaway?

Earlier this year, Callaway Golf posted this tweet about one of the newest additions to their 2013 Major Coin Collection for the US Open. To those who follow comic books, superheroes, or really just any mainstream media, you probably began to wonder—when did the designers at Callaway become such huge Captain America fans?

To those unfamiliar with Captain America, this is his symbol, emblazoned on both his shield and uniform.

Even non-Marvel fans have to admit, they are remarkably similar.

Now realistically, this was probably just a grand coincidence. However, it is certainly fun to speculate about. And for all the symbolism it’s worth, Callaway may be making a fair point with this coin.

In the world of Marvel’s superheroes and supervillains, Captain America’s shield is the symbol and embodiment of justice. It represents the following of laws and doing what is right. Maybe that’s what Callaway is getting at.

It may have just been in the past few years that some golfers have been taking shortcuts and doing things to bump their way to the top, even if sometimes it involves a little bit of dishonesty. Whether it is trying to improve a lie, having illegal grooves on a club, or, as in some more recent events, taking an illegal drop without assessing penalty.

Maybe what Callaway is trying to tell us with their new coin is that, like Captain America, players need to follow the laws of the game, and do what is right when it comes down to hard decisions.

Then again, maybe it is just a coin.
