Opti-Logic rangefinder

by Dennis Begin

This is my little yellow rangefinder, being built specifically for golfers. Insight means that you read the distance to a lone target on a straight line, like the flag on the green. This is Mode 1. There are two other modes of operation: Mode 2 is pinpoint technology and Mode 2.3, available as an option, is slope compensation for hills.

This rangefinder operates on the same principle as any laser rangefinder, that is, speed times light equals distance. A laser light bounces off the flag on the green and the distance is measured based on the travel time of the laser. With insight technology, just point and shoot in a straight line. Pinpoint technology will focus on one object and ignore the background. If the flag is equipped with reflective material, distance is easier to read. It does take some practice to focus in on your target and works best for 200 yards or less. At this distance, the rangefinder has accuracy within a yard.

The distance is displayed either internally (LED) or externally (LCD). Once the distance is acquired, the rangefinder makes a chirping sound. Being only one by four by five inches and weighing seven ounces, the Opti easily fits into your golf bag.

The Opti GT Golf Laser needs a nine-volt battery and provides 1,000 readings. The Opti comes with a two-year warranty and a carrying case and sells in the $300 range.
