Candle Lake Golf Resort

—

Surrounded by towering pines and bordered by a crystal clear lake, Candle Lake Golf Resort provides an unsurpassed vacation experience

Nestled alongside the sparkling waters of Candle Lake is Candle Lake Golf Resort, an 18-hole course located in northern Saskatchewan and a vacation destination like no other.

Carved out of the forest with generous fairways, the Candle Lake course gives every golfer, no matter what their skill level, a chance to play their own game.

It began as a nine-hole course built back in the 1970s, and under its current ownership the course has seen a lot of changes—including an additional nine holes built in 2006 with wider fairways. Other improvements include trees being thinned and underbrush being cleared, as well as renovations to the original nine. This has helped to keep the speed of play flowing, especially during busy weekends and holidays.

The pace of play has also been helped by placing pins in more generous spots and not pushing tees back. At Candle Lake, the greens are not cut super-quick so that putts don’t experience serious roll, which can slow the pace of the game.

“We usually have no trouble during the week,” said Rick Rumberger, CEO and general manager at the resort. “All of the rounds are usually around four hours—and on the weekend, that time can extend to four hours and 45 minutes.”

While the trees can make for a bit of a challenge—as can the six water hazards and 16 sand traps—Candle Lake is not just a course for highly skilled players. With tee boxes set at three positions, the course allows golfers to play to their skill level.

Understanding that the future of golf lies in attracting new golfers, the folks at Candle Lake Golf Resort encourage beginning golfers to develop their game by offering a differential rate system in the afternoons when it is slower. The resort’s reduced green fees are designed to encourage those still learning to come out at a time when they will experience less pressure to make their shots.

One of the last beautiful undeveloped lakes in Western Canada, Candle Lake is renowned for the quality of its beaches. Candle Lake Golf Resort has a full complement of vacation activities to take advantage of, allowing guests to fish one day and golf the next. Afternoons can be enjoyed boating on the lake—folks with their own boat can moor at the marina, and boat rentals are also available.

For those looking to stay at the resort, accommodations range from townhouses and cabins to an RV park, and plans are underway to expand the park to accommodate more short-term and seasonal RVers. As well, there is a new 74-lot residential subdivision bordering the course.

Candle Lake Golf Resort also offers guests a fine dining experience at the Water’s Edge Restaurant and Lounge, which overlooks the inland marina and presents a panoramic view of the lake.
