The golf in Nelson is so good that you just might end up extending your holiday
Lining up between the tee boxes looking out on Kootenay Lake, hemmed in by the Selkirk Mountains with the town of Nelson on one side and Elephant Rock on the other, you may find it hard to concentrate on your shot, standing at the head of the signature par four 16th. High above the lake, the rooster-tail peak of Kokanee Glacier looking down from the skyline at the big orange bridge provides an idyllic backdrop to the 16th, often referred to as one of the best par 4’s in the province.
Target Style: Golfers will discover several high risk and high reward holes at Granite Pointe.—photo by Andrew Zwicker
Dating back as far as the 1920s, Granite Pointe’s hilltop course was redesigned and expanded in 1993 to a full 6,209-yard, 18- hole beauty of a course. Course architect Bill Newis has made good use of the hillside terrain, incorporating a target golf style of play with a number of high risk, high reward holes.
The font nine, with a more open and flowing feel, plays more forgiving on the leveller slopes before heading up the hillier, more tree-lined back nine. Splendid wraps, burgers and quesadillas can be savoured in the spacious new clubhouse.
Situated adjacent to the heart of the West Kootenay’s queen city, Nelson, with its vibrant local culture and downtown scene, Granite Pointe makes the perfect start and end point to a West Kootenay golf tour. Be warned however; upon discovery of Granite Pointe and exploring Nelson you may not get beyond the first step of such a tour.
